What could be more gratifying for a philosopher than to be presented with a volume of essays devoted to his life's work, especially if these essays critically reflect upon his ideas? I am thankful to the contributors to this volume -- friends, colleagues and students -- for the honor they have done me by taking my thoughts seriously, and thereby occasioning their further development. These responses are preliminary steps in that direction.
