During 1940 and 1941 Courant was deeply concerned with two projects, both of which he conceived as contributions to higher education in America by one who was "profoundly grateful" for the opportunity offered him by that country. The first was a plan for a national institute of basic and applied sciences; the other was the book tentatively entitled What Is Mathematics?
