The afrocentric problematic

Stephen C. Ferguson

pp. 59-96

Abstrakt

Eurocentrism as a subspecies of ethnocentrism is based on a master narrative about (Western) Europe and the rest of the world. According to this story, African societies are naturally primitive societies with barbarous tribes in need of European civilization. In the late nineteenth century disciplines such as sociology, biology, and psychology attempted to give a scientific veneer to this racist ideology.1 Eventually, it became commonsense that Black people were the "lady among the races."2
