Hilbert was 60 years old on January 23, 1922.Naturwissenschaften, the German equivalent of the British scientific weekly Nature, dedicated its last issue in January to the birthday. The frontispiece was a photograph of Hilbert sitting in a wide-armed wicker chair. He had not changed much over the years, but time had honed the intelligence and concentration in his face until, in age, he was a more impressive looking man than he had been in his youth.
