A new form of fascism is spreading across the world today, destroying the very foundations of coexistence. This new fascism operates in the space where coexistence, meaning, and politics come into being. By overloading this space, by filling it with an excess of meaning, fascism renders coexistence ambiguous and devoid of meaning. The fascism of our time is a fascism of ambiguity that short-circuits everything it touches, including anti-fascist resistance. Where this ambiguous fascism advances, nothing remains unambiguous, nothing except the fascist end goal itself: death and annihilation. How can we understand this deadly phenomenon, and how should we respond to it? In this essay, Marcia Sá Cavalcante Schuback examines the new fascism and its connections to history, capitalism, modern technology, and what she describes as an ontological mutation, a transformation of transformation itself. As a countermeasure to fascist destruction, she also carries out three precision exercises based on music and poetry. The book concludes with a correspondence with poet Gabriel Itkes-Sznap and the essay “A Methodical Conquest” by poet and philosopher Paul Valéry.
