Mondrian's theoretical beginnings and spiritual background of neoplastic rhythm
pp. 1-39
Abstrakt
Mondrian wrote more than forty essays, addressed to both "layman' and critic alike, in his attempt to enlighten them regarding his ideas about Neo-plasticism. It was his frustration with constant misunderstandings of his realization of rhythm on canvas in particular which urged him in this endeavor to "educate' viewers. Mondrian's neoplastic canvases confront the viewer with seemingly stark geometric designs which resist interpretation according to anything but an exceptionally acute sense of the "abstract-real". Without at least a degree of preparatory elucidation, these paintings give little away that might facilitate them being read in accord with Mondrian's ideas about visual rhythm.
