Abstrakt
Courant was not kept long in suspense as to who was going to have the opportunity to develop "the really rewarding project" which he saw as existing at New York University. In June 1935, at the end of his first academic year in America, he received a note from Chancellor Chase informing him that when his temporary appointment expired the following June the university was prepared to offer him a permanent place. In the note Chase stated he believed that, in conjunction with the Institute for Advanced Study, there was a real opportunity for Courant to develop at NYU a strong graduate department of mathematics in ways that would be interesting to him.
