In spite of seven years of effort, Courant had developed only a very modest operation at NYU by September 1941. A folder of that date announcing the establishment of an Institute for Applied Mathematics in connection with the Graduate Center lists an impressive number of regular and emergency courses; but when one examines them, the new "institute" turns out to be just another name for Courant, Friedrichs, and Stoker.
