Theatre of operations

Abstrakt

Three categories have governed the dominant, academic reception of Deleuze's thought: "postmodernism," "post-structuralism," and "continental philosophy." But the association between Deleuze and these categories tends to go in one direction. While the name "Deleuze" frequently evokes the categories, the categories do not typically evoke the name "Deleuze" (or do so with considerable less frequency than they do the names "Derrida," "Foucault," or "Lyotard"). Moreover, references to Deleuze within discussions of the categories have rarely been accompanied by an engagement with his philosophy. The name "Deleuze" appears as a vacant conjunct: "and Deleuze" or "Deleuze as well."1
