It is customary, in "conclusions' to works of "criticism", to attempt to tie together the loose ends of the thesis, to present some kind of unified meaning. I have arrived at a series of conclusions in the course of the preceding text; more often than not these conclusions complement each other, while at other times they supplement or modify what has gone before. No doubt, if I were to conclude traditionally, the result would resemble very closely the "findings' presented in Josette Pacaly's Sartre au miroir:¹ the Sartrean oeuvre is structured through and through by a phantasmatic which is the dramatisation of castration anxiety; inability to confront and surmount the Oedipal moment, leading to a reversion on to archaic positions; identification with the mother, resentful submission to an omnipotent Imaginary father, inability to conceive of a "relativised" father-figure, stereotypical resurrection of the primal scene from which the mother emerges as endowed with the paternal phallus — a renewed source of castration anxiety; and so on and so forth. All of this is summed up and conveyed by a small number of images which present themselves as propositions, such as "The doll/child is being handled by the mother" or "The father is riding on the back of his son."
