Readers of Hegel have exceptional trouble with Ground,¹ so let me say off the top what it is. Ground is self-erasure, pure and simple. It is the result of Contradiction, which "falls to the ground." But self-erasure is what Essence turns out to be. On this basis, Ground is "essence put explicitly as a totality."²
