Wealth and the structure of bourgeois society

on the systematic role of capital in Marx

Pablo Pulgar Moya

pp. 129-152

Abstrakt

This article reconstructs the concept of wealth [Reichtum] in Capital, highlighting its structural role in Marx’s critique of political economy and its signifcance for the formation of bourgeois society. We argue that capitalist wealth is the developed manifestation of value as a social form and that capital must be understood as a specifc mode of socialisation articulated through a logic of domination. Within this framework: (i) value-form and commodity-form appear as abstract starting points from which the categorical determinations of modern society unfold; (ii) society is conceived not as a mere aggregate of individuals but as an organic totality; and (iii) Marx’s exposition is not ontological but categorical and systematic, aiming to critique the deceptive forms of appearance that conceal capitalist domination. The article contributes to clarifying the nexus between wealth, value, and social formation, showing wealth as both product of social labour and vehicle of its fetishised subordination.
