In front of the University of Paris, on the Place de la Sorbonne, stands a statue of Auguste Comte. He was the first person to use the word 'sociology" for a new science, and he was very likely also the first sociologist, as we will see later on. In his science and his person, many characteristics can be found to identify sociology and the scholars practicing it until today.
