Pedagogy helps learners get to know, understand and practice the tools and techniques needed to make record, review, organise, present and share audio-visual material. This chapter presents practice-based advice about this craft via: pedagogy for learning and research, choosing video cameras and other devices, tools and equipment in the camera bag, getting to know the camera controls, considering the person being filmed, camera techniques, and editing tools. This is written for adults who may wish to support children learn observational techniques and so empower them film independently. The context is always the possibility of a practice of observational filmmaking that will generate new knowledge and understanding of children's experiences as they live and learn in school.
